By AACC 21st Century Center Staff

A new budget deal signals the restoration of year-round Pell grants.

Congressional leaders reached a budget deal Sunday night that includes restoring year-round Pell grants, beginning with the 2017–2018 award year. Restoration of year-round Pell has been a top AACC priority since its elimination in FY 2011.The omnibus bill funds federal agencies through September 30. Starting July 1, the maximum Pell Grant increases to $5,920.

A vote is expected later this week. In the meantime, here’s what you can do to get the word out about the important role year-round Pell grants can play in helping students succeed in college faster.

  1. Get on social media to say #PellYes. AACC’s Pell Yes social media campaign has already garnered much attention: 3.5 million impressions on Twitter. Let’s keep it going. You can find sample tweets and images online.
  2. Get the facts. Nearly 40 percent of all community college students receive a Pell Grant. How will year-round Pell make a difference in their lives? You can use the talking points found here.
  3. Call your legislators to tell them to support year-round Pell, and reach out to Senate and House appropriators to thank them for supporting the program.

Of course, the budget deal included other measures that affect higher education, including increases to the TRIO and GEAR-UP programs. Get the details here.
