San Jacinto College’s English as a second language (ESL) program is playing a role in strengthening the local workforce. Abacus Plumbing, Air Conditioning & Electrical is partnering with the Texas college so the company’s new employees can receive vital language skills, fostering career advancement and community impact.
The 10-week course, developed and led by San Jac’s adult education and literacy and continuing and professional development programs, offers 40 hours of classroom instruction utilizing self-paced, English-learning software. Currently, 23 HVAC technicians are enrolled — many of whom are new Abacus employees — gaining language skills that promote workplace confidence and career growth.
“At Abacus, we believe investing in our employees goes beyond technical skills. Supporting the ESL program at San Jacinto College helps our team grow professionally and personally. It’s about building a stronger, connected workforce and showing them that they can always count on us,” said Tony Patiño, Abacus president.
“We are excited to expand our partnership with Abacus Plumbing. Together, we are delivering vital workplace literacy services that uplift employees and strengthen the local economy,” said Roberto Mendez, director of adult education grants at San Jacinto College.
Abacus Plumbing will continue to support the program and encourage employees across all trades to participate.
