Brookdale Community College (New Jersey) is opening the doors to its new Center for Adult Transition (CAT). This innovative center is administered by the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education through funding provided by the County College-Based Centers for Adult Transition Grant.

The center, located on Brookdale’s Lincroft Campus, is dedicated to supporting students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ages 18-24) as they transition from secondary school to independent living, career fulfillment, social awareness, and continuing education.

The Center for Adult Transition is designed to provide a holistic approach to community integration, offering comprehensive programs, resources, and networking opportunities for students, families, and community members. The goal is to ensure meaningful and successful transitions for these young adults by equipping them with the necessary skills and experiences for independent living and career success.

“We are excited to introduce the Center for Adult Transition, which reflects our commitment to inclusivity and empowerment for all students,” Brookdale President David M. Stout said. “This center will be a vital resource for young adults with differing abilities, providing them with the tools and support they need to thrive.”

The center underwent extensive renovations this summer to create a space specifically designed to serve the needs of young adults with differing abilities. The new facility will feature a state-of-the-art kitchen/café, a hydroponic system, high-tech classroom/training stations, an outdoor garden center and a student lounge.

The program offers a two-year certificate pathway that empowers students to build autonomy, explore career opportunities, and engage meaningfully in community life.

In the first year of the program, students will focus on building a foundation for independent living through a curriculum that includes essential life skills, self-advocacy, civics, community engagement, and social skills. They also will participate in wellness activities, such as nutrition education and hydroponics. The curriculum is designed to foster both independence and career readiness.

In the second year, students will follow a customized Individual Development Plan (IDP) based on their interests and goals, leading them toward continued education, employment, or active community engagement.

Class sizes are limited to 12 students to ensure personalized attention and support.

The Center for Adult Transition represents a significant step forward in providing tailored support and opportunities for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
